About Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend Traveling Exhibit
Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend is a national traveling exhibition organized by the American Library Association Public Programs Office along with the Newberry Library's Center for Renaissance Studies. It is based on a 2003 exhibition of the same name at the Newberry Library to commemorate the reign of Queen Elizabeth I on the four hundredth anniversary of her death. The exhibit will include six large panels: The Young Elizabeth, Elizabeth the Queen, Sedition and Succession, Elizabeth's England, Europe and America, and Legacy and Legend.
Specifically, viewers will be challenged to answer four questions:
- Can a woman rule?
- What is the place of religion in the state?
- What is the price of peace, and what are the true causes of war?
- How does a political leader control her image?
The traveling exhibit is composed of six large panels of images reproduced from rare books, manuscripts, maps, letters, paintings, and artifacts from the collections of the Newberry Library, the British Library, Queen Elizabeth II, and private collectors. In addition, the SCSU Learning Resources & Technology Services will display two Elizabethan era manuscripts.
