Off-Campus Access (Proxy)

Off-campus access to over 125 library databases, 20,000 full-text electronic journals, and 13,000 electronic books and reference sources is available through the SCSU library proxy. All of these resources for locating or accessing articles, electronic books, and statistical data services can be used from any location at any time. No browser modifications are required and the proxy works well with most Internet service providers.

When you are conducting research from off-campus and link to an online library service from the Library Web site or the MnPALS library catalog or use a link to a full-text article from an online course syllabus, you will be prompted to logon using your HuskyNetID (username) and password. This logon is required only once during each online session, no matter how many databases or full text sources you use.

Linking to Full-Text Articles

For faculty whose students link to full-text articles in LR&TS online subscription databases from off campus:

The proxy service software that provides access to LR&TS online database subscription services from off-campus is easier to use and offers more consistent access. However, off-campus users – including those linking through D2L or course pages -- must modify old links to make the URLs compatible with the new proxy software.

Once the links are modified, they will work for on-campus and off-campus users alike.

To create a link:

For databases with a persistent link: You will need to insert "http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL="  directly in front of the persistent URL for the page to which you want to link.

Given the link address "http://xxx.xxxx.xxx/yyyy," the new link would be "http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL=http://xxx.xxxx.xxx/yyyy ," where "xxx.xxxx.xxx" is the base URL for the full-text page, and "yyyy" is everything that follows the initial single slash "/" after the base URL.

Below are examples for most of our full-text subscription services on how to construct URLs to specific full-text articles for on or off campus access.

Academic Search Premie and 17 other EBSCO hosted databases: The best URL is the "persistent link to this record (Permalink)" that is part of the complete citation for each article. Using the example above, a URL would look like the following--

http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?
direct=true&db=aph&AN=9187923&site=ehost-live

Project MUSE: When you are writing your course pages, if you access an article from off-campus, you can simply copy the URL from the browser and use it as the link. For example, the following link can be used:

http://muse.jhu.edu.libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/ journals/american_speech/v078/78.1henderson.pdf

If you access an article f rom on-campus, however, the link will not include the proxy information. Thus, the link would read as :

http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/american_speech/v078/78.1henderson.html

You would need to add the proxy URL base for this URL to work from off-campus. The resulting URL would read as

http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?
URL=http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/american_speech/v078/78.1henderson.html

JSTOR: A persistent URL, called "Stable URL" in JSTOR, is included in the "Article Information." Use the persistent URL example above; for example,

http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login? URL= http://www.jstor.org/stable/584243

ScienceDirect: Requires the use of a digital object identifier (DOI), provided by a third party. The DOI information is located above the title on the HTML full-text.

http://libproxy.stcloudstate.edu/login?URL=http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0191-8869(02)00072-7

Help

If you have problems connecting to a library database, an electronic journal, or an electronic book, or are prompted for anything other than your HuskyNetID and password, please contact the HelpDesk (320-308-2077 or helpdesk@stcloudstate.edu) or AskRef (320-308-4755 or askref@stcloudstate.edu). There are some limited times, often on Sunday mornings, when a site will be unavailable due to server or network maintenance.
